Things to Consider Before Trying Self-Serve, Teledentistry Tooth Straightening

(Second of Two Parts)

(In our first post on this topic, we discussed the importance of determining whether or not you are a good candidate for this treatment approach — preferably by reviewing with your personal dentist, as well as the wisdom of having an oral healthcare professional take the photos and impressions of your mouth that you are going to submit to the company.)

The online and TV ads in Toledo OH, Sylvania, OH and the surrounding area for do it yourself tooth straightening are very compelling.

If you are tempted by the promise of easy, do it yourself, at home teeth straightening, here are a few more things to consider before you decide to pursue this treatment option.

Once you receive your at-home kit, how will you be monitored over the months of treatment?

  • How will you determine if the appliances fit properly?
  • What if they need adjusting?
  • How can you convey what is bothering you?
  • What if your teeth need to have additional space created as they move?
  • What about questions you may have – will you have the same person following your treatment?
  • What if complications occur, and how will you know?

With online and storefront solutions, this personal monitoring may be lacking.

The American Dental Association and the American Association of Orthodontists are concerned about irreparable damage to teeth and the jawbone that can occur with oral adjustment programs not properly monitored.

Once your treatment is complete, that’s not the end of the process.

Left alone, your teeth will want to move back to their original position.  To maintain your new smile, you will need to be fitted with and wear retainers. These may not be supplied as part of online programs (maintainers are not retainers).  Also, regular check-ups make certain that the adjustment is maintained and that there are no long-term complications.  Who will be doing these follow up visits?

New dental approaches and technology can offer consumers oral treatment options not previously available, often at reduced cost.
